The town of Tirupati is one of the most ancient and sacred pilgrimage spots in India. The meaning of the name Tirupati-Balaji is ‘lord of Lakshmi’. The renowned shrine of the deity is located on a hill at Tirumala, which is a cluster of seven hills. Tirupati Balaji Temple: The Tiruipati Tirumala Balaji Temple at Tirupati is an ancient temple located on the seventh peak, Venkatachala (Venkata Hill) of the Tirupati hill. This temple is one of the most visited ones and proudly owns the title of being the richest in the entire world. This temple is said to be the only way to salvation (Moksha) in the Kali yuga (Dark Age) and a visit to this temple is recommended even in the ancient scriptures.Hindu texts make allusions to the benefits recieved by a pilgrimage undertaken to this temple. It is a masterpiece ofDravidian architecture and dates back to the 12th-century. Besides the awe-inspiring structure,we have the idol of Lord Venkateswara, supposedly a form of Vishnu.

Padmavati Devi Temple: This charming place is home to the well-known temple of Sri Padmavathi Devi (Goddess Lakshmi), the wife of Sri Venkateswara.Tiruchanoor, also known as Alamelumangapuram, is about 5 km from Tirupati. The temple of Sri Padmavati Devi, the consort of Lord Sri Venkateshwara is situated here. It is said that a visit to Tirumala is fruitful only after visiting the Sri Padmavati Devi temple.Tiruchanoor (also known as Alarmelu Mangapuram) is 4 km from Tirupati. Buses ply throughout the day.

Sri Govindarajaswami Temple: This temple is one of the prominent tourist attractions in Tirupati. It features an impressive Gopuram easily visible from a distance. In the year 1130 AD Saint Ramanujacharya sanctified the temple.Sri Govindarajaswami is the elder brother of Lord Balaji. His temple is the main landmark of Tirupati town.

Kodandaramaswami Temple: It is located in the heart of Tirupati and the presiding deities of this temple are Sita, Rama and Lakshmana.Sri Kodandaramaswami Temple is an ancient temple that dates back to the 10th century. Built by a Chola king, the shrine is dedicated to Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. It is said that this temple is a memorial of the journey of Lord Rama to Tirupati-Balaji. On its opposite side, there is a shrine dedicated to Lord Anjaneyaswami (Hanuman).

Sri Kapileswaraswami Temple: Sri Kapileshwaraswami Temple is the only temple dedicated to Lord Siva, in the pantheon of Vaishnava temples in Tirupati. It is situated about 3 km to the north of Tirupati, at the foot of the Tirumala Hills. The sacred waterfall called Kapila Teertham (also known as Alwar Teertham) is located here. t is one of the most recommended places to visit in Tirupati and should not be missed out at any cost.

Sri Kalyana Venkateswaraswami Temple: Sri Kalyana Venkateswaraswami Temple is located 12 km to the west of Tirupati at Srinivasa Mangapuram.According to legend, Lord Venkateshwara stayed here after his marriage with Sri Padmavati Devi, before proceeding to Tirumala. Annual Brahmotsavam and Shakshatkara Vaibhavam are celebrated in grand manner.


How To Reach

By Air: The Tirupati airport is situated 14 kms east of the town

By Rail: Tirupati is well connected by train from most cities like Bombay, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Visakhapatnam, etc. There is a Saptagiri Express leaving Chennai everyday morning and returning in the evening. There are good overnight trains from Hyderabad & Visakhapatnam as well.

By Road: Buses run from all the important places in the state and between Tirupati and Tirumala. Buses also ply between Tirupati and Tirumala, free of cost. It is also connected by Highways to Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
