Rameshwaram is a small island in the district of Rameshwaram situated in the Gulf of Mannar, the narrow body of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka. It is one of the four Dhams in the Hindu legends.With thousands of temples occupying the landscape of Tamil Nadu, the state is also called the land of temples. The diversity in ethos and religious practices in Tamil Nadu has led to setting up of numerous places of worship, belonging to the followers of different religions. he place holds an important position in mythological sphere. Lord Rama before entering Lanka had constructed a bridge from this place. After defeating Ravana, he took a holy dip to cleanse all the sin and for that reason the place is regarded as one of the holy place where you can clean all your sin by taking a holy dip in this holy water.
Ramanathaswamy Temple: The Ramanathaswamy temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated in the middle of the island. It houses the linga that Lord Rama, the hero of the epic Ramayana, is said to have installed and worshiped after his victory against Ravana in Lanka.A pilgrimage centre and enshrining one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. The island of Rameshwaram, where it is situated is connected to the mainland by a bridge. A pilgrimage to Rameshwaram is one of the important injunctions of the Hindus and a pilgrimage to Kashi is not considered complete without a pilgrimage to Rameshwaram. Founded by the Chola rulers but expanded extensively during Nayaka period, in the 16th and 18th centuries this massive temple is enclosed within high walls with five gopuras.
Dhanushkodi: Named after Lord Rama's bow ('dhanush"), Dhanushkodi is 8 km away from Rameswaram. All but the Kothandaramaswamy Temple in Dhanushkodi were completely destroyed by the terrible cyclones of 1964. This temple houses graceful idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman and Vibhishana (brother of Ravana).
Gandamadana Parvatham: Gandamadana Hill, the highest point of the island houses the foot prints of Lord Rama in a two storeyed mandapa. The site is 3 km away from the Ramanathashwami temple.
Erwadi: About 24 kms from Rameshwaram is Erwadi, famous for its tomb of Ibrahim Sahid Aulia. Muslims all over the country visit the place during December every year to participate in the festival and to offer tribute to the great saint.
Adam's Bridge: This is a chain of reefs, sandbanks and islets that almost connects Sri Lanka with India. It is believed that this is the series of stepping stones used by Hanuman to follow Ravana, in his attempt to rescue Sita.
Sethu: 5-km south of the Ramanatha temple is Sethu, said to be the bridge built by Sri Rama and his army to cross over to Lanka. There is a celebrated temple of Sri Anjaneya here. It is said that in Devipatnam or Navapashanam, there are nine stones visible in the sea, visible at low tide. It is believed that these stones represent 'Navgrahas' (nine planets) and were set up by Sri Rama.
How to Reach:
By Air: The nearest airport is at Madurai(163 km).
By Rail: Rameshwaram is well connected by rails with all important towns and cities like Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Tanjavur.
By Road: Well-connected by a vast network of roads to all major cities of Tamil Nadu, Rameswaram has a bus station situated just two km west of the town. Several buses run to Madurai four times daily and also to Kanyakumari, Trichy and Chennai. Other buses travel to Pondicherry, Trichy and Tanjore via Madurai.
