Few cities can match the magnificence
of this 'museum city', located in the heart of Thar.
Founded by Rao Jaisal in 1156 A.D., on the advice of
local hermit Eesul. The Bhati Rajputs of Jaisalmer were

levied taxes on the caravans that travelled the ancient
spice route on their way to Delhi, and went on rampage
over the nearby fortresses, bringing huge wealth to the
city. Not only the aristocracy, the merchants were also
benefited, and their riches were displayed in their
richly carved and decorated havelis. |
