Marwar (or ‘the killing land’), comprising the
arid districts of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner
that one gets to see true desert. Experience the
Desert Ride where the main feature relieving the
barren and stark landscapes are the colorful
costumes of its inhabitants. The cities of the
desert are remarkably striking in their own
right. Located on ancient and medieval trade
routes that connected Central Asia and North
India with the ports of the south, they have in
spite of many changes managed to retain their
original distinctive character.
Jaisalmer or the ‘Golden city’ is quite magical
with its Sonar Kila or the Golden Fort that
seems to rise out of the desert haze, its yellow
sandstone walls gleaming in the afternoon sun.
The fort dominates the small city. Its small
market located just outside displays a large
variety of local crafts and one can readily
explore the entire town on foot. Not far from
Jaisalmer are the Sam dunes where one gets a
taste of picture-postcard desert landscape.
Jaisalmer also houses the desert festival in
spring, showcasing the wide range of culture and
artistic traditions of the desert folk. For many
this can be an unforgettable experience.
On the northern border of the desert lies the
city of Bikaner. Founded about 500 years ago it
boasts of a grand architectural heritage that
includes a substantial fort, impressive palaces,
well-established museums and of course temples.
Of these the Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum has a
vast collection of rare exhibits and artefact
covering almost every period of Indian history.
There is also the most unusual Karni Mata temple
where humble rats overrun not only every nook
and corner, but are venerated in right earnest.
Of some interest is also an important Camel
Breeding farm showcasing traditional breeds and
pastoral skills. |

In the very heart of Marwar lies Jodhpur, the
‘Sun City’. The Jodhpur fort is simply fabulous.
Known as Mehrangarh, it is apparently named
after the victim of a human sacrifice made when
the foundations of the fort were laid. Housed in
the fort is a museum, one of the best in
Rajasthan. It has an extensive collection of
Jodhpur regalia - palanquins, howdahs,
furniture, miniature paintings, musical
instruments, and costumes.
The southern district of Udaipur with its
beautiful lakes, lush green hills, exotic
palaces, forts, gardens and temples, contrasts
deeply with the desert areas. One of the most
romantic cities of world, it is often referred
to as the Venice of East. The little township of
Mukundgarh has a fine share of beautiful havelis
with murals and frescoes. |
