The desert state of Rajasthan
has distinct cultural regions born of its local
geography. Shekhawati is one such cultural
region. Stretching across the modern districts
of Sikar and Jhunjhunu, the bare flat and
colourless natural landscape is home to some of
the most exquisite frescoes in northern India.
For this reason the region is popularly called
the "Open art gallery" and quite possibly no
other place in the world houses such a large
concentration of frescoes. The Shekhawati
Splendor package takes you through the small
towns of this area that contain within
themselves some of the most elaborate havelis,
stepwells, and temples. Mandawa is a beautiful
market town and is famous for the castle (now a
heritage hotel) and its colourful havelis.
Fatehpur has some beautiful frescoes in the
Indian as well as in colonial western styles.
Dundlod is also known for its fort and a palace,
which is also now a heritage hotel. The little
township of Mukundgarh has a fine share of
beautiful havelis with murals and frescoes. The
Mukundgarh Fort with its paintings helps to get
an insight into the tradition and heritage of
the Shekhawati region. The region is best
approached from Jaipur and Delhi.
Delhi, India’s capital gives you a feel of
ancient, medieval and modern India through the
various monuments built at different points in
history. In Jaipur the capital of Rajasthan, one
can see forts and palaces representative of a
royal past. Its colourful bazaars are also a
treat for the visitors.
